Varieties of loft chairs, their characteristic features

Among all the interior styles, the loft stands out for its laconic, somewhat rude design. Combining simplicity and an absolute rejection of luxury, it is used in the design of not only rooms, but also furniture. One of the most popular interior items is the loft chair - a simple, ascetic, but not devoid of comfort product. It is represented by several varieties and has a different purpose. Having familiarized with all the features characteristic of armchairs created in a minimalist "attic" style, you can choose an option for any interior.

Style features

The industrial style of the loft began in the forties of the 20th century in America, during the period of the factory crisis. Most entrepreneurs moved to the outskirts due to insolvency. Empty warehouses over time looked after for themselves representatives of bohemia. The space, surrounded by rough brick walls, they used for housing and exhibition halls for their creative work. Subsequently, this style was chosen by representatives of the financial and legal sectors. Now it is not limited by either temporary or territorial borders. Elements of this direction can be found in the design of offices, studios, workshops, cafes, bars, country houses, city apartments. Traditionally, a loft is considered a masculine style and has all the signs of expensive asceticism.

From English, the term "loft" can be translated as "attic", "attic" or "second floor".

The main features of the style:

  1. One big common space. Between the rooms there are no familiar walls and partitions. Only bathroom and toilet are separated.
  2. Large windows to the floor. They are the main source of light, occupying a significant area of the walls.
  3. Floor design is done with wooden boards or stone slabs.
  4. The natural look of the walls. As a rule, this is natural brickwork or its imitation. Other materials for decoration are plywood, concrete, as well as elements of aged metal or wood.
  5. Conciseness, restraint and minimalism.

An important role is assigned to upholstered furniture. Loft-style chairs have an original design with interesting geometric shapes and straightforward lines. Exterior rough prostate materials combined with functional comfort.

Depending on the area of the room, you can place one or more chairs. The main thing is that they harmonize with the rest of the interior. The best places to install them are near the coffee table or window. There are no strict rules in this regard, since the loft style is democratic.

Varieties

Furniture manufacturers offer a wide variety of varieties of loft chairs. All of them differ in design, functional purpose and materials used. Before acquiring a particular option, it is worth exploring the features of each variety.

A work or computer chair in the loft style is widely in demand. It is installed in offices, home offices, wherever you have to spend a lot of time on a PC. Due to its purpose, the design contributes to a comfortable sitting and maintaining an even posture. The basis is a strong, stable metal frame. The backrest, seats with armrests, as a rule, have a laconic rectangular shape. They are covered with high-quality high-quality leather in dark colors.

Low floor construction is one of the most common varieties of loft chairs. The frame of the simplest option is made of high-quality wooden boards and covered with paint or transparent varnish. On top of the seat in a loft-style chair are several large soft pillows.

A rocking chair is the best option for relaxing with an interesting book or a cup of coffee. Also, sitting in it, it is very convenient to lull a newborn baby. The frame of such loft chairs is wooden. The back and seat are covered with soft leather in natural tones for the most comfortable pastime. The armrests have an ergonomic, smoothly rounded shape.

The suspended structure may take the form of a plastic hemisphere or wicker chair with a rigid frame and openwork walls made of rattan or high-strength textile. This design perfectly complements the living room, decorating it. Reliably attached to floors or ceilings, the chair provides a smooth swing, which favors a relaxing stay.

Loft-style chairs made of transparent or bright colored plastic, having a hemispherical shape, look harmonious in monotonous interiors with pronounced rough features.

Materials of manufacture

In the manufacture of loft chairs, preference is given to simple natural materials, which are characterized by rude features. Here, decor elements with the slightest hint of luxury are absolutely unacceptable. That is why manufacturers abandoned the use of velor, velvet and other materials traditional for “expensive” styles.

Depending on the design and purpose of the loft chairs, their frames can be made of such materials:

  • metal;
  • wood;
  • durable plastic.

For tight furniture elements are used:

  • leather;
  • rough non-woven fabric;
  • high quality leatherette;
  • tapestry.

Metal, mainly stainless steel, is used in the manufacture of frames for computer chairs. This style allows the use of water pipes of various diameters. In fact, these are optimal blanks that do not need to be shaped. You only need to trim them according to the required length. To process such elements, a grinder, a vise, as well as tools for cutting external threads are used.

To best fit the metal in the loft style, it is subjected to artificial aging through plastic deformation or heat treatment. This reliable material is ideally combined with natural or artificial leather of a dark color.

Wood is used to make the carcasses of many varieties of loft chairs. The most commonly used species are ash, oak, beech, which are previously subjected to wax or oil treatment. Curved and rounded elements of chairs are made by steaming wood at high temperatures - from 88 to 107 ° C.

Low floor chairs in the loft style are made of perfectly even boards with the preservation of the natural texture. To do this, they are pre-sanded, and then coated with a layer of transparent varnish. Artificially aged wood looks harmoniously in the interior of the loft style.

To achieve this effect, one of the three methods is most often used:

  1. Brushing, which is the treatment of a wooden surface with a stiff brush. This allows you to get rid of soft fibers, expose the annual rings of the tree. The method is suitable for polishing hardwoods - walnut, spruce, oak, larch, pine. After this, the surface topography becomes more pronounced. It can be further emphasized by applying glazing compositions.
  2. Patination - a method consisting in painting with subsequent polishing of softwood (cherry, maple). To give a brighter and more pronounced pattern, stain or special wax can be additionally applied.
  3. Thermal firing of wood with a blowtorch or gas burner. This method is applicable to any breed. The surface should be burned very carefully for a clearer manifestation of the fibers. Additional decorativeness is given using varnish or stain.

Compared with the two previous options considered, plastic is less common. Hemisphere-shaped chairs are made from it, which harmoniously complement the interior design in the loft style. In this case, the plastic is either transparent or has a bright expressive color. The main requirements for this material are high strength and non-toxicity. It is made on the basis of pressed paper impregnated with thermosetting resins.

Upholstery made of high quality leather is most characteristic of computer chairs, as well as rocking chairs. As a rule, a thick coarse skin of cattle is used. The advantages of natural material are:

  • ecological cleanliness;
  • appearance appeal;
  • ease of maintenance and cleaning;
  • dust repellent properties;
  • pleasant tactile sensations;
  • hygroscopicity.

A quality leatherette also has important advantages:

  • budget cost;
  • high strength woven base;
  • resistance to ultraviolet rays.

Loft chairs often contain textile elements - this can be either upholstery or pillows. They are mainly made from non-woven fabric or tapestry. The first material is produced in several ways: glue, knitting-piercing, needle-punched, combined. Strong and wear-resistant fabric is suitable for upholstery of volumetric chair fillers.

Tapestry is also called jacquard weaving. It combines beauty with practicality. The material has a very dense heavy structure due to the content of natural and synthetic fibers in its composition:

  • Wool
  • silks;
  • cotton
  • viscose;
  • acrylic;
  • polyester.

This material has many advantages:

  • increased strength, resistance to tears and cuts;
  • hypoallergenicity;
  • durability;
  • ease of care.

Pillows for floor chairs, rocking chairs upholstery, and also soft seats for hanging wicker items in the loft style look very impressive.

Color spectrum

The color schemes for upholstered furniture of the loft style are dominated by naturalistic muted shades:

  • white;
  • beige;
  • gray, including silver and metallic;
  • brown;
  • brick;
  • terracotta.

Bright colors, for example, red or yellow, are relevant only in the design of suspended plastic chairs in a hemispherical shape. Such products most effectively and contrastly look against the background of gray walls, treated with simple plaster.

As color accents, giving the interior a more original and interesting look, the following options are allowed:

  • black;
  • blue;
  • deep purple;
  • burgundy;
  • olive;
  • green.

Each of these shades is in perfect harmony with the basic colors of the loft style. With a monophonic design of the walls, it is desirable to select furniture items of different colors. And if at least one wall is decorated with an expressive extravagant pattern, the furniture should be maintained in a single color scheme. The loft chair is an excellent interior solution thanks to a combination of simplicity, originality, convenience and reliability.
